Description

Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (FGF-21) is an endocrine hormone that regulates energy homeostasis and exerts cardioprotective functions during heart injury. FGF-21 is expressed in the liver, pancreas, heart, and adipose tissues. FGF-21 signaling is activated through the FGF receptor FGFR1c and β-Klotho co-receptor. FGF-21 is an important regulator of glucose uptake and reduces cell apoptosis under stress conditions.

Activity Assay

Human FGF-21 is fully biologically active when compared to standard. The activity is determined by a proliferation assay using NIH 3T3 cells with β-klotho and heparin and it is typically less than 500 ng/ml. This corresponds to an expected specific activity of 2.0 x 103 units/mg.
